Crown & Bridge Treatment

What are Dental Crowns and Bridges?

Crowns and Bridges are used to restore your smile when you have missing teeth, or need damaged teeth to be cosmetically restored. If you are missing a single tooth or a couple of adjacent teeth, a dental bridge can be an effective and affordable way to restore your smile. Typically for this treatment, your dentist will prepare the teeth on either side of the gap to receive crowns; your dentist will then design a porcelain bridge with crowns on either end to anchor the bridge. As in the case of dental crowns, your crown and bridge treatment will leave you with a naturally appearing smile. As an alternative to a Crown you may decide to upon dental implant treatment to retain an implant crown, or in the case of multiple missing teeth, to support an implant bridge. Implant treatment is longer lasting, more stable, and is likely to cost less over the one term than repeated crown and bridge treatment.

What are Dental Crowns?

If you have a tooth that has become weakened because of a crack, excessive wear, a large cavity or Root Canal Treatment, then a dental crown may be the most effective treatment. A dental crown in its simplest form is a tooth-shaped top or cover that is placed over the top of a tooth to restore its size, shape, strength, appearance and function. A Dental Crown encapsulates the visible part of a tooth above the gum line. The most appropriate crown material used in a patient is often determined by an individual’s bite and aesthetic considerations. Crowns are usually made of all porcelain or porcelain fused to metal.  All crowns are custom designed, your dentist will make sure the shape, fit, and appearance of your crown are optimal to your smile. If you have lost a tooth or if a tooth is determined to be too unhealthy to crown, your dentist can replace the tooth with an implant-supported crown.

Implant Retained Crowns & Bridges

We advise our patients to think about the benefits of restoring missing teeth or of replacing their diseased teeth with dental implants. Dental implants are effectively prosthetic tooth roots that restore biting strength and also are the longest lasting treatment for restoring your smile. It is recommend that replacement of missing and severely damaged teeth is achieved via implant retained restorations because they are successful and long lasting. When your crown or multi-tooth bridge is implant retained, your smile will appear natural. Your teeth will function normally with full biting strength and your bridge or denture will not slip. Implant treatment used to restore missing teeth does not require changes to adjacent healthy teeth to retain a bridge / denture in position. Dental implants are understood to conserve facial bone tissue, they do this by stimulating bone growth and effectively preventing the further bone resorption which happens frequently when tooth roots are lost. If you need of a full denture either upper and / or lower arch, you will find that you can easily eat all your favourite foods once your denture is implant retained. You will enjoy total freedom without the need for dental adhesives, and you will smile with confidence. With proper oral hygiene, regular visits to the dentist / hygienist, dental implant replaced teeth should last the rest of your life.
